Head of Research (HOR01)
We have a fantastic opportunity for a talented and motivated individual to help shape and grow the Tuberous Sclerosis Association’s (TSA) research portfolio.  With the professional credibility and experience of research management the successful candidate will be instrumental in driving forward out research strategy and raising our profile nationally and internationally in the research arena.
 
Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a genetic condition affecting an estimated 8000 people in the UK.  TSC is caused by mutations in one of two genes: TSC1 and TSC2.  In around two thirds of cases the mutation has arisen spontaneously and in the remaining third it has been inherited from an affected parent.  TSC is a multisystem disorder that can lead to the growth of tumours in different organs of the body: brain, heart, eyes, skin, kidneys and lungs.  People with TSC may have epilepsy, ADHD, learning disabilities and autism. The TSA support individuals and families affected by TSC, supports research into the causes and management of TSC and provides education and information resources.

Head of Research
Reporting to: Chief Executive
Salary: £26-30K
Hours:   28 hours per week
Location: Home based, but within easy reach of London


1. POSITION IN ORGANISATION
The post holder will report to the Chief Executive.
The post holder will work closely with staff and volunteers throughout the TSA.


2. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To manage the TSA’s research programme, specific research initiatives and projects; to implement the TSA’s research strategy and contribute to its future development; to be a source of scientific expertise for the TSA.


Key Responsibilities
  • Administer the TSA research grants programme.
  • Manage the TSA’s research-specific initiatives.
  • Act as secretary to the TSA’s research committee (RESCOM).
  • Manage the day-to-day implementation of the TSA’s research strategy.
  • Regularly review all relevant national and international published research and identify strategic opportunities in TSC research.
  • Monitor the evaluation of outcomes of TSA funded research and promote the dissemination and implementation of research findings.
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with researchers, funders, and healthcare professionals both nationally and internationally.
  • Represent the TSA nationally and internationally on matters related to the TSC research.
  • Respond promptly to enquiries from people affected by TSC, professionals, researchers and others in relation to TSC research.
  • Support the TSA’s fundraisers by providing up to date and accurate information, assisting in approaches to potential funders.
  • Support the production of the TSA’s portfolio of evidence-based information.
  • Disseminate information on TSC related research via a range of platforms (eg. Press, website and social media, SCAN magazine).
  • Lead on the planning and organisation of research-related meetings and conferences.
  • Business planning and budget management.
  • Arrange research speakers for TSA events (eg annual AGM and family conference).


Other Duties
  • The post holder will be a member of the TSA’s Editorial Board
  • The post holder will need to travel throughout the UK and sometimes abroad.
  • The post holder should be prepared to attend meetings occasionally during evenings or weekends.


General
  • Uphold the aims and principles of the TSA and its equal opportunities policies.

3  PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Criteria

  • PhD or equivalent post graduate qualification
  • First degree in a science discipline
  • A successful track record (at least 2 years) in the management of research programmes
  • Proven leadership capability
  • Demonstrable experience of building successful partnerships
  • Experience of planning and budget management (financial acumen)
  • Experience of the evaluation of research
  • A clear understanding of a range of research methodologies
  • Demonstrable skills in analytical and strategic thinking
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills – comfortable with public speaking
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and facilitation skills
  • A team player
