Swine flu and TSC

Dr Chris Kingswood (TSA Head of Research) fielded the following questions at the AGM in November last year:

Q: Should someone with TSC have the swine flu vaccine? A: Yes, the benefits of having the vaccine far outweigh any risks. For younger children, vaccines may be given in two doses which are separated by a number of weeks. GP surgeries are aware of those patients with underlying medical conditions and as such are considered high risk, but it is recommended that you contact your surgery directly to arrange the appointment.

Q: Should parents and carers have the swine flu vaccine if they are healthy? A: Yes, again the benefits far outweigh the risk, and swine flu has killed healthy adults and children.

Update, 10 February 2010 Although Swine flu has subsequently diminished in the UK, it remains important that you know how to protect yourself, your family and others. Commenting on the decline in swine flu cases, Sir Liam Donaldson, chief medical officer for England, said: “Levels of pandemic ‘flu are currently very low virtually concluding the second wave of the infection in this country. “Although throughout it has not been a severe illness for most people, children and younger adults have developed serious complications, been admitted to hospital and some have died. “I strongly advise that those eligible for the vaccine who have not yet had it, get the jab and protect themselves.”
